Spring Is In the Air

The skies have been a little gray around here lately, but there are still signs of spring all around.  We've had bunnies in our yard and these chubby little robins keep showing up hunting for worms. Alley is going nuts. She is a bird dog after all.  The other day one of our neighbor's chickens got into the back yard when Diego was taking Alley out. Before he realized that the chicken was in the yard, Alley had it by the neck and was bringing it to him.  He was so freaked out (he loves animals) and kept telling her to put it down.  She finally dropped it and the chicken took off running across the yard!  He didn't think to grab Alley because he figured the chicken was dead.  As the chicken was making a break for a hole in the fence, Alley took off after it and brought it back to him again! This time when she dropped it, he had her by the collar and the chicken made it safely home.  Alley was left with a mouth full of feathers.  We haven't seen any chickens in our yard since.
To brighten things up indoors, I've been sewing up the May and June blocks for the Hello Sun BOM - I'm just dying to show you!  All of the patterns have been drawn up for some time now, but not sewn together.  I've been trying to stay a couple months ahead of you to get the samples done.  It has been so much fun choosing fabrics and watching them change from black and white sketches to real quilt blocks.

Since I can't share those just yet, I'll share another quilt runner that I've finished.
The buttons were so cute last time, I just had to use them again.  To change things up a little, I used a white fabric with little yellow dots as the background fabric.  The green pieces and orange binding were scraps from other project.
One day, we'll get to mending and painting that fence.  Maybe even replacing it all together.  It seems to be going from shabby chic to just plain shabby.

On The Work Table

This is the stack of fabrics on the work table at the moment.  I received this fat quarter bundle for my birthday and haven't quite figured out who it was meant for or what it needed to become.
Then Tasha came over the other day wearing a shirt in one of the colors and I knew it was meant for her.  Once the idea stuck, it was like it was meant to be.  I'm cutting and sewing and should be finished with it by the end of the day.  Quilting it is another story - maybe tonight, maybe not. I'm trying to squeeze it in among the other projects that actually have due dates:)

Slow Going

The extractions went well, and now we are on to the healing. It is definitely a slow process.
I did manage to snap a picture (the only picture they would let me post) of them using their ice packs. They just happened to both be sitting up and holding their packs the same way.  Josh's cheeks are huge and he's having a rough time of it.  Aaron has swelling but is fairing a lot better then Josh. Apparently Josh's roots were more developed.

What I've learned:

  • Make two ice pack covers for each kid, they need washing.
  • The home made gel packs are awesome, but they can only really be frozen a couple of times before they won't freeze any more.
  • Make twice as many gel packs as you think you will need. 6-8 per kid.  When you rotate them, they don't freeze as quickly as you need them too.
  • Buying that second remote for the PS3 was well worth the almost $60.
  • Even big boys want their mom sitting near by.

It was a Ghastly weekend

Not really, but wasn't the reference cute?  What is ghastly is the way I've been eating.  I really need to stop my wicked pop tart ways.
This weekend I spent much of my time on the couch watching conference and binding a couple of quilts.  There was a two hour window that I ran up and picked up some of Henry Alexander's Ghastly fabric.  Isn't it great?  It is sitting on the shelf inspiring me while I'm finishing up a few projects.
It was really nice to get all of that binding done.  Binding used to be the worst part of the quilt for me, but now that I know how to do it, I love it.  There is something therapeutic about it, like wrapping up a big project in a neat little package.

After all of that sewing for work and getting some pad orders out, a little recreational sewing was in order.
These two silly boys won't be smiling so much after they get there wisdom teeth taken out this coming Wednesday.  In anticipation of all of the ice packs that they will be rotating through, I made these little pouches to hold them.
The outside of the bag is a super soft flannel left over from the back of a quilt.  I lined the inside of the bag with PUL and added some Velcro to close. The zip lock bags will slip inside.  I think four bags will do - one for each cheek.

While cutting out the flannel, I was talking to Ella and she mentioned seeing a recipe on line for the soft gel ice packs.  Brilliant!  3/4 cup of rubbing alcohol and 2 cups of water seemed to do the trick. Any ideas for soft food besides pudding and jello?

March Winner

I'm a little late in posting the winner of our March drawing.  Each person that posted a picture in our Hello Sun Flickr group was entered one time into the drawing.

This month, the lovely Rachel Griffith from P.S. I Quilt has offered our winner the quilt pattern of her choice from her shop Rachel Griffith Designs.

These are just of few of the beautiful quilt patterns to choose from.

And the winner is...
Cat Patches!
Congratulations - I'll send you a message in Flickr with the details.

Hello Sun Cancelled

April Fools!  Sorry, I couldn't resist :)

I have always had these grand plans for a really good April Fool's Day  prank, but have never had the heart to pull them off. It just seems mean some how.

It is gray and cloudy today.  The pink blossoms on the tree out front pop against the gray sky.  I can't think of a better day to introduce the April Block  for the Hello Sun Quilt Along.

You know what they say...April showers bring May flowers.
